Why do Patients with Hypertension Need Health Insurance?

Hypertension is a common medical condition where the person’s blood pressure increases abnormally. Read to know about health insurance for hypertension in India.

The modern, fast-paced lifestyle, lack of physical activities, unhealthy eating habits, erratic sleeping patterns, and high-pressure jobs have resulted in the rise of various lifestyle diseases such as cancer, hypertension, etc. What is even more alarming is that youngsters in their 20s and 30s are suffering from such illnesses.

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is a common medical condition where the person’s blood pressure increases abnormally. The condition is prevalent among both men and women. The normal blood pressure range is 120 mm Hg over 80 mm Hg. However, if the person has hypertension, the reading could cross well over 120 mm Hg.

Although you can control your blood pressure levels with medication and lifestyle changes, you must not take the condition lightly. If left untreated for long, it can lead to severe consequences like heart attack, stroke, etc.

Hypertension and Health Insurance

Sometimes, even if you maintain a healthy lifestyle, you may not be invincible to hypertension. You can be prone to high blood pressure due to family medical history and genetics. Hence, you must be adequately prepared for such instances. And one of the best ways to be ready for any medical contingency is to have a health insurance cover.

Health insurance is a necessity for all. But it is critical if you are diagnosed with or at high risk of hypertension. Here are a few reasons why a health insurance policy is a must-have for hypertension patients.

  • Cover the high medical costs
  • If hypertension is not managed efficiently early, it can affect other organs like the heart, brain, liver, and eyes. It also increases the risk of heart attack and a host of other critical illnesses that can have fatal consequences.

The treatment for such illnesses can be costly, and you may need hospitalisation for a prolonged period. In the purview of medical inflation, you may end up depleting your years of hard-earned savings without health insurance.

  • Helps in early detection
  • Medical experts suggest that hypertension is one of the biggest causes of premature death worldwide. Early detection of hypertension can reduce the risk of severe consequences.

This is where a health insurance policy is beneficial.

Most health insurance companies require the policyholders to take annual health check-ups. This can be beneficial for you as you can diagnose hypertension at an early stage and take necessary precautions immediately.

  • Waiting period
  • Almost all health insurance plans have a waiting period clause for hypertension. The waiting period can range from 12 to 48 months. Hence, it is vital to purchase health insurance at a young age when you are healthy. This will ensure that you have the necessary financial cushion if you get diagnosed with hypertension in the future as you grow old.

Be ready for medical emergencies with health insurance

Life can be unpredictable. A medical emergency can occur at any time without any warning. While you may not be able to prevent such incidents, the best you can do is be prepared for all the possible adversities. Buying a health insurance policy at an early age will give you peace of mind knowing that you have financial protection. You need not feel the stress of paying medical bills while you are suffering from hypertension already.
