If you have paid an additional tax, you have a right to claim a refund for the same. Every year individuals file income tax returns, and many do not know if they are eligible for the same.

    Key takeaways

  • You could be eligible for an income tax refund if you paid more in taxes than you were obligated to.
  • If you are eligible, you will receive an intimation from the income tax department, which will mention the refund amount that will be credited to your account with a ‘Refund Sequence Number’.
  • You must determine the refund amount in order to request one. The sum between the tax you paid and the tax liability will be this. Before filing a claim, check the status of your refund status online.
  • To check the income tax refund status, you need to log on to the website of NSDL-TIN using the assessment year and PAN number, follow the steps and check the status of your income tax refund.

Many are also not aware of the process for claiming a refund. Here is the full guide on how to check the income tax return status online in India.

What is an Income Tax Refund?

You could be eligible for an income tax refund if you paid more in taxes than you were obligated to. If the amount of taxes paid (either through Advance Tax, TDS, TCS, or Self-Assessment Tax) exceeds the actual amount of taxes owed, the excess tax paid may be refunded. Before starting the return, the income tax division will recalculate the taxes and verify the refund claim.

Taxes paid (either through advance tax, TDS, TCS, or self-assessment tax) minus the total amount of taxes due on the income for the current year equals a refund.

Claim Income Tax Refund

As a taxpayer, you can claim an income tax refund if they have paid more than the actual liability. You will receive an intimation from the income tax department, which will mention the refund amount that will be credited to your account with a ‘Refund Sequence Number’.

Eligibility for Tax Refund

Below mentioned is the eligibility for a tax refund. You are eligible if:

  • You have paid excess tax than the tax liability
  • Your employer has deducted more TDS as compared to the tax liability
  • You have paid double tax in a foreign nation which has a double taxation avoidance agreement with the Government of India
  • You have undeclared investments, which provide you with tax rebates

The Process to Claim Income Tax Refund Online

You must determine the refund amount in order to request one. The sum between the tax you paid and the tax liability will be this. Before filing a claim, check the status of your refund status online. The processing period will range from two to six months. After the claim has been approved, you will receive the amount in your bank account.

Check the Income Tax Refund Status Online

To check the income tax refund status, you need to log on to the website of NSDL-TIN using the assessment year and PAN number. After you log in, if you find a message that reads, TDS refund status ‘expired’, you need to take additional steps. If you have made an offline application, you can contact the assessing officer for a refund. In case of an online refund application, you can log in to the tax portal and opt for the ‘Refund Re-Issue’ option under the ‘My Account’ section by providing the Refund Sequence Number and Central Pay Commission Communication number.

If you find a message that reads ‘refund returned’, you need to make a re-application either online or in person. If the message reads processed through credit mode but unsuccessful, you need to contact the office by providing the details of your bank account number for a reissue. If you see a message, which reads paid, but you have not received it, you need to contact the bank to know more about the transfer status.

If you read a message that says that the amount is processed through National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), but the transaction has failed, you need to get in touch with the assessing officer to verify your account details and get the refund re-issued. Alternatively, you can log in to the electronic filing system, verify your details, and re-issue a request for a refund.

Conclusion

Overall, checking your income tax refund status online in India is quite easy and efficient. All you need is your PAN card number and your acknowledgement number. Once you have this information, simply visit the NSDL website, enter the necessary details, and you can quickly view the status of your income tax refund. With this process, you can easily keep track of your refund and ensure that it is processed in a timely manner.
